Background:
The association between prediabetes and long-term outcomes in patients with three-vessel disease (3VD) is largely unknown. The aim of the current study is to compare long-term outcomes in 3VD patients with prediabetes (pre-DM) with those in patients with normal glycemic status (NG) or diabetes mellitus (DM).
Methods:
In this prospective cohort study, a total of 8891 patients with 3VD were enrolled from April 2004 to February 2011 in Fuwai hospital. Patients were categorized according to status of glucose metabolism (NG, pre-DM, and DM) levels. The primary endpoint was all-cause death. Secondary endpoints included cardiac death and major adverse cardiac and cerebrovascular events (MACCE), a composite of death, myocardial infarction, and stroke.
Results:
During a median follow-up of 7.5 years, 1354 deaths and 2340 MACCEs occurred. 3VD Patients with DM tended to have higher risk of death, cardiac death and MACCE than patients in Pre-DM or NG group (all P£¼0.05)£¬whereas risks for death, cardiac death and MACCE did not differ significantly between Pre-DM and NG group. 3VD patients with DM also had higher risk of stroke than those in NG group (P£¼0.05).
Conclusion:
Long-term outcomes in terms of all-cause death and MACCE in 3VD patients with prediabetes does not differ from those in patients with normal glycemic status.
